When I moved home to the small town of Shelburne, Vermont in 2016, I was asked to join the board of a beloved (yet perennially under-resourced) local craft education nonprofit. Founded in 1945 by a local reverend with a passion for woodworking, Shelburne Craft School has offered classes in wood, clay, glass, metal, fiber, and other tactile arts for more than 75 years.
During my time on the board, I helped the Craft School transition from a paper to a digital system — building them a website to gather crafter profiles, process course listings and registrations, accept donations, award scholarships, support gallery sales, and publish news announcements.
The website also offered a way for the Craft School to tell its own story through an historical timeline, acknowledging its many amazing milestones achieved through the generous support of the local community.
