26 below
When I returned to Caldera yesterday, the power had been out for 16 hours, starting at 2AM the night before, when the outside air temperature reached 26 below zero. The heat came on again around sunset, but some pipes had frozen and burst in the outage, and all the buildings were very cold. Dinner was cooked and consumed in scarves and hats and gloves, wood stoves struggled to heat up their hosts, and there was nothing to do but bundle up and wait for the edge of the cold to be blunted. Today the edge is not so sharp, but if you're not careful it can still cut you.
